English for Engineers: Best Wishes!

English for Engineers: Best Wishes!

  1. It is unfortunate that more than 70% of the engineering students in India are unemployable because of their lack of communication skills in English. (The Hindu, 2009) The scenario does not seem to be changing much. There are several reasons for which such a situation has come to exist. As pointed out in the report, the main cause could very well be the lack of sensibility on the part of engineering college administrators who hardly consider English as an important subject at par with other core areas. In fact, they do not want to realize the precarious position the engineers are in.

Apart from the above mentioned reason, the teaching methodology and the materials used by the English teachers are pathetic. The teachers hardly have any kind of training when they take up the challenging task of teaching students of technology. Their love for Shakespeare and Wordsworth proves worthless in this case. The prospective engineers find their teaching monotonous and uninteresting. It is high time AICTE does something to save the sinking boat of English for Science and Technology (EST) in the country.
